Global Day for Darfur

On Sunday, September 17th, people around the world will gather for a GLOBAL DAY FOR DARFUR. You can read all about it here. Click on a location in the left sidebar for rally details in various cities. If you don't live near a rally but would like to show your support, you can do a number of things:

You can organize an event in your town. Steps to help you take local action are listed here.

Many entities have joined together for the Global Day for Darfur on September 17. You can read about their goals for Darfur here.

You can add your name to the Day for Darfur campaign--scroll down to the bottom of the page here.

You can add a blue U.N. Peacekeeping beret to your photo and add it to the Global Day for Darfur gallery here.

And, as always, you can join us as a Blogger for Darfur by adding our candle logo to your sidebar. Instructions on how to do that appear in the post immediately following this one.

Darfur needs us--NOW, as much as ever.

THE ONLY HOPE FOR DARFUR: WE-THE-PEOPLE. Duh.

It is said that the mark of truly being “crazy” is expecting different results from doing the same thing over and over and…. Ok, we needed to try some new approaches, hoping we could find a new formula for mass social change (stopping Genocide has NEVER been done.); looking for one that would be comfortable, convenient, safe, executed from our computer terminal / phone / TV or office in some combination. The variations we’ve tried are: * Blame (Bush, UN, EU…) , * Emails, letters, postcards…,* Letting the Nonprofits do it, * Divestment. And the results are in. WE ARE NOT, STOPPING THE GENOCIDE!

You mean that the answer for Darfur is the same answer we found for…* Ending the Vietnam War, * Gaining Civil Rights in the US, * Gaining Women the right to Vote in the US, * Ending apartheid in South Africa, * Throwing off the British oppression at our start....?

Yup. No one else, nothing else can stop it, can save 4,000,000 in Concentration Camps in Sudan and Chad. The buck stops with WE-THE-PEOPLE. Let’s stop talking and start - marching, demonstrating, sitting-in, hunger striking….

The next step is September 17th (SaveDarfur.org; DayForDarfur.org). BUT, then we need to be ready on SEPTEMBER 18th, 19th… AS LONG AS IT TAKES, WHATEVER IT TAKES.

Over on The Wizard, fkap we're encouraging everyone to wear a blue hat or a blue scarf today to help raise awareness of the Darfur genocide.

Not everyone lives in a city with a rally. But you can tell your friends and neighbors and ask for their help.

The issue of darfur to me seems to be an over blown issue . the african union is capable of handling the issue. i dont see anything wrong with the UN Funding the african force. If western government really want to show that african lives are worth saving let them send tropps to somalia the government there is asking for help. or could it be that somalia is not important because they have no oil

All this week CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 will be focusing on Africa, the hope, the horror, the out and out genocide in some places and why so much of the world doesn't seem to care. The fighting in Congo has stopped, but in the last 10 years or so, that fighting has resulted in the death of 3 million to 4 million people. It is the deadliest war since World War II. In Darfur, the genocide continues. Below are some transcripts of reports that aired last evening from Anderson Cooper, Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Jeff Koinange. In addition, Cooper, Koinange and Dr. Gupta are blogging from the region this week. You can read some of their posts by clicking on the link below.
